UTZ Harvest Improvements

What is UTZ?

UTZ Certified is an independent, non-for-profit programme and label for sustainable farming worldwide. UTZ enables farmers to learn better farming methods, improve working conditions and take better care of their children and the environment. Through UTZ, farmers aim to grow better crops, generate more income and create better opportunities while safeguarding the environment and securing the earth's natural resources. Options Hot Chocolate supports sustainable farming by buying UTZ certified cocoa.

Options Hot Chocolate operate under the UTZ mass balance certification scheme and will be supporting sustainable farming by buying certified cocoa. When we purchase our UTZ Certified cocoa we are helping build a better future.

What does UTZ mean?

"Utz" means "good" in the Mayan language Quiché.

Why does UTZ exist?

Good chocolate no longer just means good taste, quality and price; today's consumers also demand it to be made with care for people and the environment. They expect manufacturers to be able to assure them of responsible production, for instance appropriate and modest use of fertilizers and pesticides, farmers' children sent to school, farm workers given decent housing, healthcare and training, and producers empowered to be professionals, with access to market information and relationships with their buyers.

Hands on Mug

The UTZ mission is to achieve sustainable agricultural supply chains, in which:

  • Farmers are professionals implementing good agricultural practices;
  • Industry takes responsibility by demanding and rewarding sustainable production;
  • Consumers can trust their brands and buy products which meet their expectations of social and environmental responsibility

How does UTZ work?

The challenge of creating sustainable farming worldwide is too large for any organisation alone. So UTZ forms partnerships with organisations around the globe, collaborating with small local farms and larger cooperatives.

UTZ have developed and implement a worldwide certification program which incorporates:

  1. Field support networks,
  2. Standards and certification services,
  3. Traceability system

This allows producers to show that they operate responsibly, in accordance with strict social and environmental standards. This in turn provides manufacturers with the assurance of responsible production they can credibly demonstrate to their consumers.
